The Astounding Athletic Powers of Quadcopters

The Astounding Athletic Powers of Quadcopters

by Eirik Solberg on Sep 24 2014
In a robot lab at TEDGlobal, Raffaello D’Andrea demos his flying quadcopters: robots that think like athletes, solving physical problems with algorithms that help them learn. In a series of nifty demos, D’Andrea show drones that play catch, balance and make decisions together — and watch out for an I-want-this-now demo of Kinect-controlled quads.

This is a sample of some of my lunar videos and images taken with an Imaging Source DMK41AF02 astronomy camera attached to a 10″ dobsonian telescope. Each video (avi file) is processed using AviStack to stack only the best portions of each frame in the avi to produce one image (shown after each avi). Each image is then processed in AstraImage (LR Deconvolution) and Photoshop Elements (Levels, Enhance Shadows/Highlights, etc). CBS 60 Minutes Special | Drones Over America

by Eirik Solberg on Jun 26 2014
The following script is from “Drones Over America” which aired on March 16, 2014 , and was rebroadcast on June 22, 2014. Morley Safer is the correspondent. David Browning, producer. They’re everywhere – we’re talking about drones – not the impersonal killing machines that patrol the badlands overseas, but drones used by the FBI, by university researchers, by amateur photographers, even by your nosy neighbors. As we reported in March, domestic drones are poised to become a multi-billion dollar industry, revolutionizing everything from crop management down on the farm to possibly – package delivery to your front door. The federal aviation administration is trying to figure out the rules of the road for drones, but for the moment, they’re barely regulated.
Introducing Imaging Source USB CMOS Auto Focus Cameras

Introducing Imaging Source USB CMOS Auto Focus Cameras

by Eirik Solberg on Jun 18 2014
USB CMOS Color Auto Focus Cameras The Imaging Source color autofocus cameras have been designed for applications where the distance between the object and camera changes. Using the camera’s One Push autofocus, which is driven by the supplied software, the object always stays exactly in focus, despite a constantly changing working distance. The autofocus camera ships with a USB 2.0 interface and a sensitive sensor from Aptina, which deliver excellent image quality, even in poor lighting conditions. The autofocus camera is priced for cost sensitive machine vision applications. DRONE FLIGHT OVER TEL AVIV – YAFO from Lauren Tolila on Vimeo. The above video was filmed with a DJI Phantom and GoPro 3+ Black Edition over the beautiful beaches of Tel Aviv, often called “the city that never stops.” It was the first modern Jewish city built in Israel, and is the country’s economic and cultural center. It is a lively, active city with entertainment, culture and art, festivals, and a rich night life. This video truly represents the high energy and vibrancy the city has to offer. This is a breathtaking video of a drone maneuvering through a fireworks display, getting close and personal for a new perspective on these grand spectacles that we’re so used to seeing from the ground. Drones are giving us new ways to see our world from above with minimal risk and effort. Imagine what other aerial shows we can see through a drone’s camera lens.
Amazing Drone Footage of a Rocket Test Launch

Amazing Drone Footage of a Rocket Test Launch

by Eirik Solberg on Apr 22 2014
Drone’s are proving to be a great tool for surveying new space programs and prototypes from an safer vantage point. This amazing drone video was recently taken by SpaceX, showcasing the prototype F9R rocket flying upwards from its launch pad. The footage shows the rocket rising to over 800 feet high and then hovering in the air. Most impressive of all though, is the fact that the craft came right back down and landed perfectly at its testing facility in Texas. Typical rockets are limited to single use. After they are launched into space, they separate from the main craft and fall back down towards Earth, usually landing in the ocean for safety reasons. The prototype’s successful first test flight is part of SpaceX’s F9R testing program and their ultimate goal is a fully reusable rocket which will halve the cost of launch fees.
